Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest set to start on November 21 in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the likelihood of participating.

"It's clear that time is getting short and there are permutations at play, not just the physical problem, but further aspects," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he's going to play a major part. Hopefully it's the first Test. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of back injuries, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss three Australian summers in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to make the squad for the Ashes.

He mentioned that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches anyway. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
