Tetris Wouldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Might Solve This

As any prominent honors show approaches, there’s always a clamor for the addition additional classifications to honor overlooked contributions and delight the spirits of enthusiasts with niche passions.

Another commentator made the case for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are board games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why cinema institutions avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of video games, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories actually cover many game types, making space possible for numerous titles.

Not so for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers published annually without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition completely in 2014
  • Another creative title received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored recently
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with popular creative games for the title of most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, while interacting with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Logic title developers operate at the hard edge game development, developing some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
