This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Here's a dare for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Get comfortable with your partner and stream Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. At first glance, it may seem like conventional physical horror, but beneath Together resides a intense contemplation about how we choose to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together represents the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have been together for a decade. Having wed in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a particular energy to their roles, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The story commences when Millie and Tim relocate from the metropolis to the rural area for professional reasons. A familiar story element, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the tropes end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the two tumble into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a strange force starts to affect the duo. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a slow burn fright fest, interspersing moments of fever-dream horrors, gross (but never too gross) body horror, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes during something disturbing). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is suffering due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and far away from his social circle. He fears the notion of completely losing his individual identity in another person. This fear is amplified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision is that he never makes Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Both characters confront the type of challenges that arise in most partnerships over a long period. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism never feels overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could act as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your partner and say, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu at present.
